In an encouraging match in the Indonesia Open badminton tournament Thursday in Jakarta, local girl Maria Kristin Yulianti outplayed second seed Yao Jie of the Netherlands in front of the fanatic fans.
Taking the initiative to attack, Maria quickly sealed the first game with 11-3 win over the world number four.
She didn't reduce pressures to lead 7-1 lead in the second game before China-born Yao gradually collected points. But it was just too late for the visitor to fight back and Maria cheered local crowd with an 11-6 victory.
"I only tried to play my best and keep pressures on her. I tried not to lose easily because it was our first match. I think Yao didn't show her normal play today," 20-year-old Maria commented on her opponent.
In the third round of the 250,000 US dollars tournament, Maria will play Kaori Mori of Japan who beat another Indonesian hope Silvi Antarini 2-11, 11-8 and 11-4.
