As reported by People's Daily on September 22, director of the State Administration of Taxation, announced at a working conference for income tax that the national taxation authority had collected 564.5 billion yuan of income tax from Jan. to Aug. this year.

That is an increase of 34.56 percent, or 145 billion yuan, which is 40.44 percent of the total amount of the increase in tax revenue.

The income tax revenue rose by 6.64 times to 581.8 billion yuan in 2004 from 76.1 billion yuan in 1994. It went up faster than the increase in the tax revenue as a whole over that decade.
