HK to guarantee smooth conduct of WTO conference: Official
font size

Hong Kong Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee said on Monday that he is certain that Police, who have been well-trained and equipped, are capable of handling security work for the coming WTO Sixth Ministerial Conference.

He said the subsidiary legislation on proposed closed areas near the WTO Sixth Ministerial Conference venue will be submitted to lawmakers in October for negative vetting.

Speaking on Radio Television Hong Kong's "Dialogue with Secretaries" program, Lee said the government aims to ensure the smooth conduct of the conference and minimum inconvenience to the public.

From security and traffic management angles, there is a need to designate restricted access zones around the conference venue, he said.

Lee stressed the government values the freedom of expression but will not tolerate any acts of violence.

He said the police have already gone abroad to learn experience in maintaining security for large-scale international conferences and they will keep alert on any violent acts during the conference.

The WTO ministerial conference is scheduled to be held in Hong Kong in mid December and over 10,000 people, including delegates and correspondents, are expected to attend or cover the conference.
