Indonesia has grounded thirteen air carriers from seven airline companies because of technical problem, the Bisnis Indonesia daily reported in Jakarta Tuesday.
"Until September 26, there are 13 commercial air carriers that are not allow to flight," Head of Airplane Maintenance Department of the Indonesian Transportation Ministry Yurlis Hasibuan said.
He said that the step was taken after the ministry asked to intensify ramp check from every quarter to every day, following the crash of a commercial air carrier Mandala into a populated area after failure take off in the capital of North Sumatra province of Medan, that killed over 140 people.
Hasibuan said that the ramp check was conducted in five international airports in the country.
He said that most of the grounded planes were type of Boeing 737-200.
"The type of airplanes checked are Boeing 737-200, Boeing 737-300, B737-400, B737-500, MD 82, Focker 50 and Airbus A330," said Hasibuan. He said that more domestic commercial air carrier intensify their maintenance after the authority intensify the ramp check.
