The battle of opposing and containing separatist forces and activities advocating Taiwan independence remains arduous and complicated, top Chinese leader Jia Qinglin said in Beijing Thursday.
Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the remark when meeting a delegation of the China Council for the Promotion of Peaceful Reunification.
He called on the council to continue upholding the one-China principle by carrying forward the tradition of patriotism and fully understanding their historical tasks.
Jia, also director of the council, said China has successfully resolved Hong Kong and Macao issues and is now working for resolving the Taiwan issue at an earlier date. In this process, many Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan compatriots and overseas Chinese have made great contributions.
There have appeared more positive signs of checking separatist activities Taiwan independence with the efforts made by mainland and Taiwan compatriots this year, Jia said.
He urged the council to adhere to the principle of "pinning hope on the Taiwan people" and keep on promoting cross-Straits exchanges to strengthen the forces against separatist forces.
