Japanese motorcycle-maker Honda Motor Co. on Friday launched its 15 millionth unit since it operated in Indonesia in 1971 and inaugurated its third plant with the presence of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
Honda cooperated with local automotive firm PT Astra International to establish PT Astra Honda Motor (AHM) with a 50-50 ownership. AHM now controls over 50 percent of the Indonesian market share.
Built on the area of 30 hectares in Cikarang, West Java, some 30 km east of Jakarta, the new plant has production capacity of 1 million units a year, AHM president Minoru Yamashita said on the occasion.
With the establishment of the 140 million US dollars plant, AHM has targeted to boost total production to 2.6 million units this year from around 2 million last year.
