6 sailors stranded in Taiwan Strait rescued
font size

The six sailors of a general cargo ship stranded in the Taiwan Straits on Saturday morning has been rescued.

The ship from Wenzhou of east China's Fujian province, which has a tonnage of 198, was grounded one sea mile off Beiding Island in the Taiwan Strait at 1:30 a.m. As the tide was on the ebb, the ship might capsize any moment.

After receiving the call for help, the marine bureau of Xiamen immediately launched a rescue operation. The crew on the grounded ship were transferred to a rescue ship by 4:00 a.m.

The unlucky ship was returning from Xiamen port to Zhangjiagang port in the north after completing a transport mission when it ranaground.

An official with the Xiamen marine bureau said waters near the Beiding Island are subject to strong wind, rapid currents and are spotted with lots of reefs. Passing ships should keep enough safe distance from the Island.

Specific cause of the accident is still under investigation.
