The economically developed Shanghai reported a double-digit growth in retail sales in August,with consumer price index, or CPI, moving up at a faster pace.
According to the municipal bureau of statistics, in August Shanghai's retail sales increased by 12.1 percent over the same month of last year to 24.9 billion yuan (3.1 billion US dollars) in August, partly driven up by the catering, home decoration and telecommunication equipment sectors.
The retail sales amounted to 190 billion yuan (23.4 billion US dollars) for the January-August period, up 11.2 percent.
In August CPI went up 1.3 percent in Shanghai, and the growth rate was 1.1 percentage points higher than the month-earlier level,the bureau said. Over the first eight months of this year, the index rose 1 percent year-on-year, involving a 0.3 percent increase in prices of consumer goods and a 3.1 percent increase in services prices, the bureau added.
