General Motors Corp. reported on Monday that its sales in the United States declined by 24 percent to 344,797 units in September.
The decline of GM, the largest US automaker, was the result of higher gasoline process and demand pull-ahead from its "employee purchase" discount program that encouraged some customers to advance their vehicle purchase by a few months to take advantage of the deals.
The report showed that GM's divisional performance, the truck- centered GMC brand fell by 40.7 percent to 37,233 units, while the volume-leading Chevrolet brand declined by 27.5 percent to 205,238 units.
Buick and Cadillac were both down more than 15 percent, while Saturn posted a 7.6 percent sales gain to end the month at 18,569 units and Hummer sales were up a dramatic 127.9 percent to 5,806 units.
