Israeli soldiers shot dead Tuesday morning a Palestinian woman who stabbed a female Israeli soldier in the West Bank, witnesses said.

The witnesses said the knife-wielding Palestinian woman stabbed a female Israeli soldier at the Hawara checkpoint near the West Bank city of Nablus, moderately injuring the soldier.

The Israeli soldiers opened fire at the Palestinian woman who later died of her wounds.

The identity of the woman in her 20s is not immediately known.

The Israeli army said the Palestinian woman stabbed the female soldier in the face, adding that the soldier sustained moderate wounds and was evacuated from the scene.

Shortly after the attack, the Israeli army shut down the checkpoint and prohibited the Palestinians from entering Nablus.
