Premier Wen stresses workplace safety after coal mine burst

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and other leaders Tuesday urged the country's industry sector to lay stress on workplace safety after Monday's gas explosion in a coal mine in central Henan Province.

The Premier said that special attention should be paid to workplace safety during the week-long National Day holiday.

He demanded workplace safety authorities and industries recheckand rearrange safety measures.

Thirty-four miners were killed in the gas explosion at the state-owned No. 2 Colliery of the Henan Hebi Coal (group) Company early Monday morning. The accident also left 19 people injured, who doctors said are in stable condition.

Local officials said compensation work is under way
