Suspicious packages sent to Thai, Japanese embassies in Malaysia
font size

Thai and Japanese embassies in Malaysia's capital of Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday were on alert after receiving suspicious packages, Thai media reported.

Japanese staffs were evacuated pending investigation into the package, Thailand's newspaper the Nation said on its web edition.

It was not immediately clear whether there was any threat to either embassy, officials and witnesses were quoted as saying.

Japanese Embassy press attache Satoshi Tamai said officers and local staff were evacuated at 2:30 p.m. local time. "We can tell you it was suspicious mail and we reported it to the police," Tamai said.

"The contents are still being investigated to see if it's biological stuff and I think we are still waiting for the results," he said.

Japanese Embassy staffs were told to leave the building without any reason given via the speakers system.

Police and fire engines are on the scene and the section of the road in front of the embassy has been closed off.

The embassy is located in Kuala Lumpur's diplomatic district and is not far from the city's famous Petronas Twin Towers.

About an hour later, police were called in to the nearby Thai Embassy, which reported receiving a letter that contained "a suspicious substance," said an embassy staff member, speaking on condition of anonymity.

However, police just took away the envelope from the Thai Embassy but not ordered evacuation.
