Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Wednesday urged the Indonesian Military (TNI) to play an active role in the country's fight against terrorism.
"I ask the TNI to take part in preventing and fighting terrorism," the president said when speaking at a ceremony commemorating the 60th anniversary of the founding of TNI.
Susilo said the law no. 34/2004 gives a mandate to the TNI to take actions against terrorism apart from their in-the-war duties.
"Many terror attacks have been carried out in our country, ruining the image of the country in the international community," Susilo said.
The remarks were made only days after the Saturday's bombings on the resort island of Bali that killed 27 people and injured more than 120 others.
