Sri Lanka export earnings record growth

Sri Lanka's export earnings had recorded a growth during August 2005, Central Bank announced Wednesday.

"Export earnings recorded a growth of 21.2 percent in August 2005 reaching the highest ever monthly value of 584 million US dollars," a Central Bank statement said.

However, the bank said that cumulative trade deficit during the first eight months of the year had widened.

"Despite the widened trade deficit the overall balance of payment position was further strengthened as the surplus improved from 134 million US dollars in July to 191 million dollars by end August," the statement added.

Sri Lanka's economic growth rose 6 percent in the second quarter this year in comparison with the same period last year, the Central Bank said last week.
