Afghan puts off announcement of legislative polls' result

The Joint Electoral Management Body ( JEMB) has postponed the announcement of the result of the landmark Afghan parliamentary elections amid accusation of rigging by some candidates, a senior official of the entity said Thursday.

"The JEMB can announce the final results once the Election Complaints Commission (ECC) completes its mission. We are hopeful to release the final results by the end of October," Chief Electoral Officer Peter Erben told journalists at a press briefing here.

He made this announcement while the physical counting of all the ballots has been completed and the audition of nearly 60 percent of the counted ballots is over all over the country.

Presently, the ECC has been reviewing numbers of complaints submitted by several candidates for the Wolesi Jirga (National Assembly) and Provincial Councils.

Earlier, the UN-sponsored JEMB had planned to announce the historic polls' result on October 22.

Citing alleged rigging, logistical problem and malpractice in the elections for the delay in announcing its results, the official confirmed that several cases of the fraud had been discovered.

"There were cases of malpractice and the JEMB has so far decided to exclude 299 polling stations from counting process," Erben pointed out.

He also confirmed that several hundred of ballot boxes have been put on quarantine and their results will be released soon.

Announcing the result of the two western provinces of Farah and Nimroz, the official added that the result of the provinces would also be released.

Some 6.8 million or 53 percent out of 12.5 million Afghans registered to vote had dared Taliban's threat and used their franchise to elect the member of parliament and provincial councils on Sept. 18 amid tight security.
