More than 1,000 people might have been killed in a powerful earthquake that rocked northern Pakistan on Saturday morning, a government official told reporters.

Major General Shaukat Sultan said though they don't have exact numbers, "casualties will be high, they could be well over 1,000."

According to Hong Kong Observatory, the epicenter of the quake, measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale, was determined to be 34.4 north latitude and 73.5 east longitude, about 100 kilometers northeast of Islamabad.
