Darfur peace talks in Nigeria drag on as peacekeepers killed

The Sixth Round of the Inter-Sudanese Peace Talks which opened in the Nigerian capital Abuja on Sept. 15 is currently discussing the issue of power sharing but the talks are making slow progress because of the controversy surrounding who should represent the movement in the talks.

Abdul Jabal Dosa, who is in the SLM negotiating team, explained that the problem had to do with insistence of Chairman of the Movement Abdulwaheed Mohmmed Nur that his list was the genuine one.

He told Xinhua that the chairman, the Vice-Chairman, Hamis Abdallah and the Secretary General of the Movement, Mini Arkou Minnawi, had agreed on a list but that the chairman instead decided to present his own list.

"As at now only the views of the chairman is being heard at the talks but the problem can be solved if the AU insist on the common list. The Vice chairman was here at the beginning of the talks while the Secretary General did not come at all," he said.

Dosa said 22 people from the list approved by the three leaders were on ground in Abuja and that while the general view is that they should be allowed to select from the list submitted by the chairman, those they think are capable of presenting the movement's stand, the chairman had refused.

He said that the Movement was planning to hold a convention in Darfur to find a solution to the leadership problem at the Abuja talks.

Dosa said the movement was meeting with the Nigerian leaders Sunday in respect of the matter.

"We believe the Nigerian government can exert pressure on the chairman to be flexible because we don't want the talks to collapse," he said.

Parties to the Sudanese Peace Talks include the Government of Sudan, SLM/A and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM).

As the talks drags on in Abuja, the AU said three Nigerian soldiers and two civilian drivers were killed in a clash Saturday with gunmen dressed in SLA uniforms.
