font size

At least four Tamil Tigers were killed and five others were injured in an attack believed to have carried out by the renegade faction of Tigers, police said Tuesday.

The attack took place around 11:00 p.m. local time (1700 GMT) Monday night at Vavunathivu in the eastern Batticaloa district in an area controlled by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels.

The succesful ambush was the work of the group led by Vinayagamurthi Muralitharan alias Colonel Karuna, who broke away from the LTTE in March 2003, police said.

Police added that among those killed were a senior local member of the LTTE.

Meanwhile the Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP), a rival LTTE organization, blamed the Tigers for the killing of one of its electoral organizers for the Presidential election to be held on Nov. 17.

The EPDP's Pottuvil town organizer was gunned down by the LTTE's pistol gang at around 5:30 p.m. local time (1130 GMT) on Monday.

The police said This was the first election related murder since the nominations were closed for the Nov. 17 poll last Friday.
