Hong Kong eyes breakthrough in table tennis, badminton at Beijing Olympics

Hong Kong is hopeful of making breakthrough at Beijing Olympics in table tennis and badminton, said a senior sports official of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) here Thursday.

"The competition level of Olympics is very high. We will be very happy if we win one Olympic gold medal in 2008," said Victor Hui Chun Fui, chairman of Hong Kong Elite Sports Committee. However, he refused to identify any specific target.

Hong Kong's only gold medal at Olympic Games came from female windsurfer Lee Lai-shan in Atlanta in 1996.

Hui Chun Fui is leading a group of Hong Kong officials and sports promoters, who were visiting the Olympic Center of Nanjing, where the 10th Chinese National Games is being held. He said the facilities of the center are beautiful.

Anissa S. Y. Wong, the director of leisure and cultural services department and one of the group members, said Hong Kong residents are interested in the National Games and Hong Kong sent 178 athletes and 71 staff to the games.

"Some Hong Kong residents came to watch the games on their own," she said, adding that the group members will report what they have seen here to the Hong Kong residents.

Hui Chun Fui expressed satisfaction with the overall performance of Hong Kong players, saying that Hong Kong has hope in winning medals in cycling, tennis men's singles, badminton, table tennis and canoeing over the next days of the National Games, which will end on October 23.

HKSAR has attended the National Games three times since Hong Kong returned to China in 1997.
