India, Maldives to send security teams to Dhaka for SAARC
font size

Security teams from India and the Maldives are expected to come here Monday to check the security arrangements for the 13th SAARC Summit, which will be held next month in Dhaka.

The security teams from the two countries will check the security arrangements at all the venues where South Asian leaders will meet on Nov. 12-13, local daily New Age reported on Monday.

According to the daily, other SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) member states will carry out the security check-up by their own security staff stationed in their respective missions in Dhaka.

Foreign Affairs Adviser and SAARC Chief Coordinator Reaz Rahmansaid Sunday Bangladesh has speeded up pre-summit work since Pakistan reconfirmed its participation in the summit despite the Oct. 8 earthquake that has claimed at least 38,000 lives in Pakistan.

"Pakistan has clarified that they are committed to attending the summit. So far this is like the green signal we have received," Reaz was quoted as saying.

On security issue, Reaz said six subcommittees have been working on this particular subject to arrange blanket security during the summit.

Some 250-300 members of the official delegations of SAARC countries are expected to come to Dhaka, and around 300 foreign media personnel are likely to cover the summit.
