Grass roots vote for more than 20,000 village leaders in TibetGesang, director of Luoyang Village Committee in Tibet, is trying to persuade villagers to rebuild their frontages into shops for catering business. This is part of his efforts on honoring his commitment to increasing villagers' income after he was elected director. Gesang is one of the 20,796 village heads who have taken office as the result of direct election in Tibet which has won wide satisfaction of the public in this autonomous region. There are 5926 village committees in Tibet. 5893 of them have completed their election for new leaders, in which villagers voted for 20, 796 committee members managing the village affairs, with 5893 of them acting as directors, 7135 of them as vice directors and 7768 of them as committee members. In the election launched in April this year, administrations at all levels in Tibet followed carefully the laws and local regulations on the organization of village committees or residential communities committees. Through the election, villagers who proved their integrity, competence and commitment have become new members of the new leadership while cadres losing people's support lost their position.
