A leading official of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in Hong Kong said on Wednesday that The Fifth Report of the Constitutional Development Task Force accords with the Basic Law.
He said the report is also in consistent with the related decisions and interpretations of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) and accords with Hong Kong's practical conditions.
Li Gang, deputy director of the Liaison Office, told the press when attending an activity that as the methods for selecting the Chief Executive in 2007 and formation of the Legislative Council in 2008 deal with the amendment of the Annex 1 and Annex II of the Basic Law, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government had already exchanged views and consulted with departments concerned of the central authorities.
He said he believed and hoped that the Hong Kong public would support the report and jointly promote Hong Kong's constitutional development along the track of the Basic Law and finally reach the goal of universal suffrage of the Chief Executive and all members of the Legislative Council.
Li said Hong Kong's constitutional development requires development in a gradual and orderly manner, which would lay foundation for maintaining Hong Kong's prosperity and stability.
He said the proposals are drafted on the basis of widely collecting views from the public, thus representing the majority view of the public and embodying the principle of gradual and orderly progress and "balanced participation," which will be supported by all walks of life.
