A senior Communist Party of China (CPC) official calls for the advancement of socialist ethical and cultural undertakings across the country as he presided over a conference in this regard on Friday.

All the people in China should be imbued with the national spirit with patriotism at the core and the spirit of the times with awareness of renovation, said Li Changchun, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and director of the Central Commission for Guiding Ethic and Cultural Progress of China.

The concept of taking people from the starting point should be adhered, and the core position of the masses of people should be respected, Li acknowledged, so that everything should be done for the people, and all achievements shared by the people

He commended the nationwide selection of civilized cities, counties, villages and institutes launched in March, saying that "the drive has helped to promote fresh progress in socialist ethnical and cultural development."

He also called on local governments at various levels to attach more importance to the development of science, education and various undertakings to raise the cultural levels of the farmers and other people and step up ethnical education of youngsters as well as the ideological, political education of college students throughout the country.
