UN agency provides fund for rehabilitation in northern Uganda
font size

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has provided Uganda with 99 million US dollars for the rehabilitation program in the northern part of the east African country.

UNICEF country representative Martin Mogwanja was quoted by local press on Monday as saying that the UNICEF made a 180-million- dollar humanitarian appeal in the current financial year, but have only received 55 percent of the fund.

"The northern war is an issue that occupies us day after day. We have requested the UN Security Council to put the issue of violation of children's rights in the north on its agenda," Mogwanja said.

He called on the Ugandan government to respect human rights, saying that "we are interested in strengthening democracy."

Over 1.4 million people have been displaced in northern Uganda by the Lord's Resistance Army in their 19-year rebellion against the government.
