Taliban militants killed three Afghan civilians and injured three others on Monday night when they targeted US forces near Afghan capital Kabul, a local official said Tuesday.
"Taliban militants have got the information about Coalition vehicles would go from Kabul to Paktiya's provincial capital Gardiz, and prepared to ambush them in Tangi Waghjan area, about 10 miles south of Kabul at about 7:00 p.m. last night. But they accidentally attacked the two civilian cars following behind the Coalition, and killed three Afghans and injured three others," Khan Mohammad, police chief of Logar, the neighboring province of Kabul told Xinhua.
"The two cars were only about 30 meters behind the Coalition vehicles, and were not allowed to surpass. Maybe this is one of the reasons for them to be taken as part of Coalition convoy and were attacked besides it's dark at that time. I also wonder why Coalition vehicles went away and didn't stop and help the Afghan civilians being under attack," he added.
After the collapse of Taliban regime in late 2001, about 18,000 US-led Coalition troops stayed in Afghanistan for the cleanup operation of Taliban remains. Till now more than 200 US troops have died in the Enduring Freedom Operation in Afghanistan.
Taliban militants who vowed to continue Holy war until the withdrawal of all the foreign troops, intensified the attacks and even suicide attacks against Afghan and foreign troops especially after failing to derail the landmark September parliamentary elections.
Over 1,400 people including rebels, Afghan and US troops as well as aid workers and pro-government religious leaders have been killed in Taliban-led militancy this year.
