HK chief on political development
font size

Chief Executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Donald Tsang said Wednesday Hong Kong had to take a "building block" approach to its political development.

Speaking to more than 350 people at a luncheon attended by leading financial market and business figures in New York, Tsang said Hong Kong cannot simply clone a foreign system into its political structure.

The chief executive said Hong Kong must be allowed to devise its own political system, and in a way that will not cause social disruption or economic chaos. The city has to take a "building block" approach to political development, and decide which building blocks are needed, added the CE.

"I suggest we work on all these elements and reach the final destination of universal suffrage as quickly as possible," said Tsang.

He pledged to try his best to seek legislative support to pass the political reform package unveiled last week.
