China provides anti-drug training for Laotian police

China started a training course for 30 Laotian police officers on drug control law enforcement Wednesday in Kunming, capital of China's southwestern Yunnan Province.

During the one-month course, the fourth of its kind, the Laotian police will learn about subjects such as the anti-drug situation and strategies, drug inspections, and anti-drug law enforcement.

China has provided three rounds of training courses from 2002 to 2004 to altogether 90 Laotian anti-drug officials, according to An Guojun, an official with the Chinese Ministry of Public Security.

He said China and Laos have maintained effective cooperation in drug control. In recent years, the Laotian government has put a lot of manpower and material resources into solving the drug problem. Laos will forbid planting poppies this coming December.

The training course is being held in Yunnan Police College, which is the first college of China to set up anti-drug courses. It has already trained more than 2,000 anti-drug Chinese police officers, and nearly 500 officers from southeast Asian countries.
