The Indonesian government is interested in buying or reproducing bird flu medicine from Hungary amid limited global stocks of the Tamiflu medicine, an official said here Thursday.
"The president has asked me to contact Hungary about possible access to get the products or production license of the bird flu medicine," Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda said shortly after meeting President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the state palace.
The president expressed his interest after the Hungarian government claimed the invention of new bird flu medicine, he added.
Wirajuda said Hungary has provided an alternative for Indonesia to get the medicine. At least four people died of bird flu in Indonesia.
"The Tamiflu medicine produced by Swiss-based pharmaceutical firm Roche has got order for production until 2007. It is not easy today to get the Tamiflu," Wirajuda said.
