Mexico's most famous soccer player in history Hugo Sanchez Tuesday was dismissed from UNAM after the 1-2 defeat versus America and 18 losses in 31 fixtures.
The president of the club, Arturo Elias Ayub said "a decision was reached with Hugo Sanchez to conclude his participation as coach of the club".
The decision happens after Sanchez, former striker of Real Madrid, registered 18 losses in 31 games over the past two tournaments, with only seven victories and six draws.
Also under the directon of Sanchez, UNAM lost the final of the CONCACAF Champions League versus Costa Rica's Saprissa, in spite of having the second leg at home.
UNAM could not qualify to the second phase of the local tournament last year either, and now the team are, with 13 points, at the bottom of Group Two.
Some sources have mentioned as a possible replacement Miguel Espana, who currently is in charge of the second division team of the club.
Hugo Sanchez, 47, who in 2004 won two titles said "I feel those two championships showed was qualified enough to go coaching in Europe."
He has expressed his wish to coach Real Madrid and the national team of Mexico.
The winner of the Pichichi title to the top scorer of the Spanish soccer on five occasions mounted an endless campaign against the current coach of the Mexican national team, Ricardo Lavolpe and campaigned for the job himself.
Finally, he reminded UNAM, under his direction, "has been the only Latin American team to defeat Real Madrid at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium".
The former soccer star began his career as soccer player with UNAM in 1975 and then moved on to play in Spain for seven years with Real Madrid. He also played 60 games with the national team, including three World Cups.
