Plans are afoot to build a research and development (R&D) and industrialization base for stem-cell technology and products in this northern China industrial center. It will be the largest of its kind in China and a leading center in Asia.
Under a cooperative agreement signed on Thursday by the management committee of Tianjin Economic and Technological Development Zone and the Research Institute of Preclinical Medicine of the Chinese Academy of Medical Science, the project will require an investment estimated at 20 million yuan (2.5 million US dollars).
The joint venture will set up a stem-cell-oriented regeneration medicine platform in three years.
Named Tianjin Taida-Union Regeneration Medicine Co., Ltd., the project will initially produce stem-cell medicines that are now undergoing clinical tests. It will also develop stem-cell technology to be used for curing blood diseases, cardio-vascular disease, liver diseases, diabetes and immune system disorders.
