More than 150 European Union (EU) observers will take part in the monitoring of the parliamentary elections in Venezuela scheduled for Dec. 4, the EU executive body said Wednesday.
The EU decided to send an election observation mission to Venezuela after receiving invitation from the South American country's electoral authorities, the European Commission said in a statement.
EU Commissioner for External Relations Benita Ferrero-Waldner said the commission is following the situation in Venezuela with great interest, "in particular efforts to promote national reconciliation and respect for democratic principles, tolerance and dialogue."
The observers will be deployed throughout the country to follow the campaign period and pre-election preparations as well as voting, counting and the tabulation of results, it said.
