US attorney general says corrupt officials should be brought under justice
font size

US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said Saturday in Beijing that the US government believes that fleeing corrupt officials should be brought under justice.

Gonzales told the press that he and his Chinese counterparts have had discussions on the matter related to apprehending and extraditing corrupt officials who had fled from China.

"Our government is ensuring that people engaging in criminals are brought to justice, and we will be happy to look at specific cases to see what the United States could do," Gonzales said.

China's top legislature approved in October China's entry into the United Nations Convention Against Corruption. The convention will take effect on December 14.

Official statistics show that from 1993 to January 2005, more than 230 Chinese suspects had been extradited to China from over 30 countries and regions with the help of Interpol. The Chinese authority has also extradited foreign suspects who absconded in China to their own countries.

Referring to cooperation on anti-terrorism, Gonzales said the United States and China have already set up a number of working groups.

He said the two sides promised to continue cooperation with these groups and will see "whether more of these groups will be necessary."

The United States is trying to be cooperative as it can with the Chinese government, Gonzales said.

Gonzales started his three-day visit to China Thursday as guest of Chinese State Councilor and Minister of Public Security Zhou Yongkang.

During the visit, Gonzales met with Luo Gan, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, and senior officials of China's Ministry of Public Security, Supreme People's Procuratorate and Ministry of Justice.
