Hong Kong is confident to hold a successful ministerial meeting of World Trade Organization (WTO) coming in mid-December and push forward the WTO trade negotiations, said the commercial chief on Monday.
The sixth WTO ministerial conference would become the most important milestone in Doha Round negotiations, said John Tsang, Hong Kong's secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology.
At a CEO meeting held here on Monday, Tsang wished the coming WTO conference to achieve substantial results.
He noted that advancing the stagnated Doha Round negotiations has become a common expectation of the members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) at their latest forum just concluded in South Korea.
Tsang said he had talks with officials of nearly all the other APEC members and all of them expect to see tangible results at WTO meeting to be held on Dec. 13-18 in Hong Kong.
Though still one month away from the WTO conference, local media already showed interest in the event, publishing warnings from non-governmental organizations that protest against globalization would be staged outside the meeting venue.
Meanwhile, Hong Kong government reiterated that no disturbance to the conference would be allowed.
