Guangdong to exploit oil shale to generate electricity

The Guangdong Yuedian Oil Shade and Electricity Company, jointly founded by five companies on Nov 23, is to invest 3.7 billion yuan to exploit the oil shale reserves. Its project to generate electricity from oil shale will reach a scale of 1.2 million kilowatts.

Maoming has an oil shale reserve of 5.4 billion tons, an equivalent to 63 percent of Guangdong's primary energy.

The capacity of the power plant is 1.2 million kilowatts. The first phase construction of the power plant, with total investment of 3.7 billion yuan, will put up two 200,000-kilowatt Oil Shale Circulation Fluidized Bed units. In the meantime, the company will construct an oil shale mine with annual output of six million tons.
