Manchester clinch second place while Everton shrug off relegation risk
font size

Manchester United moved up to the second place of the English Premiership with a 2-1 win over West Ham on Saturday when Everton beat Newcastle 1-0 to climb their way out of the relegation zone.

Manchester United paid the perfect tribute to George Best by scoring a comeback win. The Red Devils were determined to put on a show to honour arguably the club's greatest ever player and they did not disappoint, as they came from a goal down to claim the win.

Marlon Harewood scored in the first minute, but the visitors hit back to claim victory thanks to second half goals from Wayne Rooney and John O'Shea.

Everton's manager David Moyes has been feeling the heat with his side struggling in the drop zone after last year's heroics, and things had gone from bad to worse with a 4-0 mauling at West Brom last week.

Moyes called for a response from his side, and he got a performance full of commitment and energy, although the game was a scrappy encounter.

Newcastle were undone just a minute after the break when Joseph Yobo wriggled free of his marker to head in the winner from a corner, and the relief ringing around Goodison was evident at the final whistle.

Chris Coleman's Fulham have been consistently inconsistent so far this season, but they knocked high-flying Bolton out of their stride with a 2-1 win at Craven Cottage thanks to Brian McBride's brace.

The Trotters had won three on the spin in the league but they could not follow up their midweek Uefa Cup draw with a win back in domestic action.

Sam Allardyce's men could have gone joint second in the table but were 2-0 down inside 20 minutes when McBride scored two well-taken goals for the hosts.

Sylvain Legwinski put through his own net under pressure from Kevin Nolan in stoppage time but it was a little too late for the visitors, who suffered more misery as El Hadji Diouf was again courting controversy as he was sent off by referee Graham Poll after the final whistle had gone.

Middlesbrough went ahead, and later had to come from behind, in an entertaining 2-2 draw with West Brom at The Riverside.

Mark Viduka scored a well-taken opener after 12 minutes, but the hosts were pegged back when Nathan Ellington capitalised on some hesitant defending to drill home an equaliser just six minutes later.

Kanu fired Albion in front on 57 minutes but Bryan Robson's men were denied a first away win of the season when Yakubu calmly dispatched the 66th-minute penalty awarded for Paul Robinson's needless barge into the back of Szilard Nemeth.
