A batch of zero-tariff Thai fruits entered China through a port in southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region for the first time in late November.
The new channel has formed beside the traditional one through Guangdong, according to the local customs. An agreement was signed between China and Thailand on zero duties for Thai fruits and vegetables in October, 2003.
The batch of Thai fruits arrived at Guangxi through Laos and Vietnam, with 24,685 yuan (3,047 US dollars) in duty fees waived.
It takes about seven days for Thai fruits to enter China through Guangdong, while it takes about two days for Thai fruits to enter China through Guangxi, according to Lin Xinhua, a businessman dealing with Thai fruits.
With improved road traffic in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), China and ASEAN countries have observed an increasing trade volume. More Thai fruits are showing competitive edges in the Chinese market.
China and ASEAN have agreed to build up a free trade area before 2010.
