Sony: over 100 mln sets of PS2 entertainment systems sold globally

Sony Corporation announced recently that more than 100 million sets of its PlayStation 2 (PS2) entertainment system have been sold globally since it hit the market in March, 2000.

According to Sony statistics, by November 29, the sales figures for PS2 are: 40.65 million sets in North America, 37.14 million sets in Europe and 22.22 million sets in Asia (including Japan). The global total number is 110 million sets.

Sony used nine years and six months to sell 100 million sets of the first-generation PlayStation (PS), but only five years and nine months for PS2, three years and nine months shorter.

Sony pins high hope on its PS3 which is to debut at the beginning of next year. Its launching date falls behind its rival Microsoft, whose next-generation game player Xbox 360 has been put on American market and will be sold in Europe and Japan on December 2 and 10 respectively.
