Leaders from Central America and the Caribbean countries will meet in the US city of Miami on Monday for the 29th Annual Miami Conference on the Caribbean Basin to discuss ways to boost economic performance, local press in Mexico city said on Sunday.
The three-day meeting, with a theme of "A prosperous third border," is hosted by the Caribbean Central American Action (CCAA), which promotes economic development in the Caribbean basin.
Nicaraguan President Enrique Bolanos is expected to open the event on Monday morning.
CCAA President Federico Sacasa said said participants will try to "determine what we need to make this a wealthy neighborhood... to face a world which grows ever more competitive and populations which face ever more poverty each day."
Participants of the meeting will also include Honduran President Ricardo Maduro, Salvadoran Vice President Ana Vilma Albanez de Escobar, Prime Minister Kenny Anthony of St. Lucia and Jose Miguel Insulza, secretary general of the Organization of American States.
Other participants are US government officials and more than 700 representatives from both public and private sectors in the region.
