Acting as the representative of the Communist Party of China (CPC), senior CPC official Huang Yuejin attended the 46th national congress of the ruling Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) held in Sofia on Saturday and Sunday.

At the invitation of the BSP, Huang, deputy head of the United Front Work Department of the CPC Central Committee, attended the congress and conveyed a message of congratulation by the International Department of the CPC to the Bulgarian Socialists.

He also conveyed the greetings of CPC leaders to their counterparts of the BSP, formerly known as the Workers' Party and the Communist Party.

The BSP is Bulgaria's oldest and largest party. Originated from a party founded in 1891, it has been using the current name since April 1990.

Huang and his delegation paid a visit to Plovdiv, the second largest Bulgarian city, on Sunday.

The BSP electoral committee on Sunday once again selected Sergey Stanishev, who is prime minister of the ruling coalition government, as its chairman.

Stanishev has been leading the BSP since December 2001 when former Chairman Georgi Parvanov won the country's presidential election.

The coalition government led by Stanishev came to power in August after parliamentary elections in June. It consists of the Socialists, the National Movement of former King Simeon II and the ethnically Turkish DPS party.
