Islamic FMs open preparatory meeting for Mecca summit

Foreign ministers from member states of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) met in Saudi Arabia's Mecca on Tuesday to prepare for an OIC summit due to open on Wednesday.

The one-day foreign ministerial preparatory meeting was presided over by host Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al Faisal, said reports reaching here from Mecca.

Speaking at the meeting, Faisal urged participants to take a deep and careful look at the Mecca draft document to be raised to the extraordinary summit.

The document comprises an overall view on the reality of the Islamic nation, its joint aspirations and hopes and the application of the principles of tolerance, equality and fighting injustice and corruption.

Faisal, meanwhile, noted that the upcoming summit will discuss the challenges besetting the Islamic nation and will lay down a clear working program to confront them.

OIC Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu also spoke at the meeting, hoping the preparatory meeting will endorse a working program concerning a roadmap for joint Islamic action over the next ten years.

After the opening session, the meeting turned into in-camera discussions over items on the agenda.
