Shanghai is expected to become world's largest freight port at the end of this year, according to materials provided by the Ministry of Commerce.

During the Jan.-Nov. period this year, the throughput at Shanghai port totaled 404 million tons, up 16.6 percent year on year. The total throughput at Shanghai port for the whole year is expected to hit 443 million tons, ranking first in the world.

In 2004, Shanghai was the second largest freight port, with throughput of 379 million tons, and following Singapore, whose throughput was 388 million tons.

Figures show in the first ten months this year, Shanghai port's container throughput reached 14.89 million TEU (twentyfoot equivalent unit), exceeding the whole container throughput last year.
