Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng on Friday encouraged Chinese Singaporeans to bond with other communities in the country.
"We can not be an enclave unto ourselves and cut ourselves off from the other communities in Singapore and in the region. Our destiny is in multi-racial and multi-religious Singapore," Wong said at an event held by the Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Association.
Wong, also minister for Home Affairs, urged Chinese Singaporeans to learn more from others, especially the rich cultures of the Malay and Indian communities, and bond with them as a people.
He stressed that community leaders of all races and religions are needed to help calm Singaporeans and restore confidence should any event that shakes the racial and religious harmony here happen in the future.
"To prepare ourselves of the eventuality (that) there is a bomb explosion in Singapore, we plan to hold dialogues with community leaders in the coming months to work out a community engagement program," Wong said.
