Closed-circuit TVs installed to monitor traffic during WTO conference
font size

Hong Kong's Commissioner for Transport Alan Wong said Saturday more closed-circuit televisions have been installed in Wan Chai to monitor the traffic situation in the area during the WTO Sixth Ministerial Conference period.

Speaking on a radio talk show, Wong said an emergency transport co-ordination center has been set up to monitor traffic round the clock and there will be a media center at his department's headquarters to ensure a prompt information dissemination.

The commissioner said it is his top priority to maintain a smooth traffic flow on Gloucester Road, adding it will help avoid traffic chaos on Hong Kong Island.

If untoward incidents occur, the department will stop vehicles from entering high-risk areas while police direct vehicles in the areas to leave in an orderly manner, Wong added.

When asked whether taxi drivers can refuse passengers' requests to enter high-risk areas, Wong said they have the right to do so provided that they give a reasonable and clear explanation to passengers.
