Tanzanian presidential candidates and their priorities

With the rescheduled general elections only two days away, the candidates vying for the 2006- 2010 presidency of the United Republic of Tanzania are kicking hard in their final race to the State House.

Campaigning aides have summed up the priorities of these presidential candidates in an attempt to hit home their respective campaigning manifestos.

Following are the 10 union presidential candidates and their top five priorities of governance if elected:

Leonard Shayo (57) representing Chama Cha Demokrasia Makini ( Party for Serious Democracy) -- Modern agriculture, better education and healthcare, uplifted industry, poverty reduction, and increased local investment;

Freeman Mbowe (44) representing Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA) (Party for Democracy and Development) -- Good governance, provision of quality education, provision of quality health services, modern agriculture, and creation of job opportunities;

Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete (55) representing Chama Cha Mapinduzi ( CCM) (Party of Revolution) -- Maintenance of peace and stability, economic growth, agricultural development, improved education, and quality health services;

Ibrahim Haruna Lipumba (56) representing Civic United Front ( CUF) -- Fight against corruption, improvement of agriculture and food security, increase of employment opportunities, improved education, and provision of basic health services to all;

Christopher Mtikila (55) representing Democratic Party (DP) -- Nationality indigenization, formation of Tanganyika government, modern agriculture, improved healthcare and education, and modification of constitution;

Edmund Adrian Sengondo Mvungi (53) representing National Convention for Construction and Reforms (NCCR-Mageuzi) -- National reconciliation, modification of constitution and legal system, economic capacity building, better education, and better health services;

Emmanuel Makaidi (62) representing National League for Democracy (NLD) -- Improvement of national economy, better health services, better educational system, fight against corruption, and strengthened national security;

Anna Claudia Senkoro (43) representing Progressive Party of Tanzania (PPT-Maendeleo) -- Fight against corruption, government of national unity, creation of job opportunities, improved health services and education, and minimizing expenditure;

Paul Henry Kyara (58) representing Sauti ya Umma (People's Voice) -- Agricultural revolution, better water distribution, educational empowerment, extraction of minerals and precious gemstones, and better international economic relations;

Augustine Lyatonga Mrema (60) representing Tanzanian Labor Party (TLP) -- Poverty eradication, fight against corruption, provision of free education, provision of free medical services, and formation of acceptable constitution.
