China sends out 3rd peace-keeping riot police contingent

A special United Nations plane left Beijing for Haiti Monday with China's third contingent of peace-keepers sent to help maintain order in the Caribbean country, reports a source with the Ministry of Public Security.

The 125-member team underwent three months of intensive training in China before its departure. The members were trained in language and peace-keeping skills and briefed on the local political situation in Haiti.

They were appraised by UN officials who accepted their qualifications.

The team will be stationed in Port-au-Prince and will be charged with maintaining security during Haiti's upcoming general election.

China's second contingent of peace-keepers was sent to Haiti in April and it is scheduled to return to China on Wednesday.

China's first team of peace-keepers were in Haiti for a year beginning in September 2004.
