Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa has called for enhanced trade links with the United States, noting that aid and debt cancellation are not enough for wealth creation.
While speaking here Monday when receiving a letter of credence from the US Ambassador-Designate to Zambia, Carmen Martinez, Mwanawasa said developed countries need to reduce trade barriers and subsidies that are holding developing countries' efforts of wealth creation, the Zambia News and Information Services reported.
Mwanawasa asked Martinez to assist Zambia in wooing American investors to the country, adding his country has a lot to offer to American investors in commercial opportunities.
He said Zambia shared concerns with the US on the war against terrorism, saying terrorism has no border and no country could claim to be safe from it.
Martinez said the US government values Zambia's cooperation in war against terrorism, saying she would work towards ensuring that the relationship and visions shared with Zambia are achieved.
She however said that her priority area was to help the southern African country fight HIV/AIDS epidemic, which is decimating its 11 million people.
