Statistics from the first national economic census show that 122.096 million people were employed in all industrial sectors at the end of 2004.

China has a total of 1.45 million industrial corporations that employ 96.44 million people, and 5.32 million industrial self-employed units with 25.66 million people, said the census bulletin released here Wednesday by the National BUreau of Statistics.

The first-ever national economic census, which formally began on Dec. 31, 2004, was designed to draw an economic panorama of the country's fast-expanding secondary and tertiary industries and complete a database covering all economic sectors.

Among all industrial corporations, 30,000 are state-owned enterprises, accounting for 2.1 percent; 152,000 are collectively-owned enterprises, accounting for 10.5 percent; 947,000 are private enterprises, accounting for 65.2 percent, 59,000 are Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan-invested enterprises, accounting for 4.1 percent; 55,000 are foreign-invested, accounting for 3.8 percent.

Among all employees in industrial corporations, 13.3 percent are working in state-owned enterprises, 7.6 percent in collectively-owned enterprises, 21.3 percent in overseas-invested enterprises and 35 percent in private enterprises.

China has 82,000 mining corporations, 1.33 million manufacturers, and 40,000 suppliers of power, gas and water, accounting for 5.7, 91.6 and 2.7 percent of the total, according to statistics.
