Demonstration continues in Hong Kong
font size

Demonstrations continued Wednesday as the Sixth Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO) entered its second day in Hong Kong.

Demonstrators from South Korea, India and the Philippines gathered around Admiralty, downtown of Hong Kong, Wednesday morning to oppose the privatization of public service sector under the General Agreement on Trade in Service.

One demonstrator from South Korea was slightly injured as he and other demonstrators tried to ram through the cordon of the police around the public activities area. Pepper spray was used to disperse demonstrators, but no body was arrested.

The demonstrators, who were later dispersed by police, went to the Victoria Park to hold a rally, expressing their anti-WTO stance.

Meanwhile, demonstrators from the United States, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Mexico and the Philippines went to their respective countries' consulates in Hong Kong to lodge their petitions.

Most of the stores near the demonstration areas were closed and their business was affected.

This is the third anti-WTO demonstration since Sunday.

On Sunday and Tuesday, thousands of anti-globalization and anti- WTO protestors staged demonstrations here to oppose the current WTO ministerial conference.
