Russia slams Iranian leader's Holocaust remarks
font size

Russia slammed Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad's latest remarks on the Holocaust as " unacceptable" Thursday and reiterated its support for Israel's right to peaceful co-existence with its neighbors.

Speaking on state television Wednesday, Ahmadinejad termed the Holocaust as a "myth" created by Europe to establish a Jewish state in the Middle East.

"We think attempts to revise widely accepted historical facts of World War II, including the Holocaust, are unacceptable," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Such speculations "run counter to the United Nations Charter and the opinion of the international community," it added.

"Russia regards Israel as a sovereign state that has a right to live in peace and security with its neighbors, including an independent Palestinian state," the statement said.

Ahmadinejad, who in late October called for Israel to be "wiped off the map," has sparked a new barrage of international criticism by questioning the truth of the Holocaust.
