Chinese travelers can use China UnionPay card in Japan from Dec. 15. China UnionPay and Sumitomo Mitsui declared the news.

China UnionPay cards will be acceptable mainly in Tokyo and Osaka. So far 300 home appliance retailers, department stores, duty-free stores, hotels and souvenir shops have been ready to offer this service. Next year 5,000 retailers will have the sign of China UnionPay.

The amount of RMB yuan equivalent of the yen-denominated consumption in Japan will be deducted from the cardholder's account. The amount is based on the exchange rate on the day of consumption.

The China UnionPay cards function the same way in Japan as it does in China.
